Court funds Sandford Duncan Inn cemetery repairs ahead of spring tours

Simpson County Fiscal Court voted March 21 to fund immediate repairs to the cemetery at the Sandford Duncan Inn so the site can be included in the inn’s spring and summer tours.
Simpson County Tourism Director Amy Ellis and Nicky Hughes, curator at the Sandford Duncan Inn, told the court the county owns the property while Tourism manages tours; they asked the court to fund repairs to headstones and the cemetery fence and to add a gravel path from the inn to the cemetery. Preservation specialist Thomas W. Fugate is slated to oversee the restoration work, which the materials set for April 4–7.
Magistrate Marty Chandler moved to authorize $1,000 plus whatever gravel is needed to complete the project; Magistrate Scott Poston seconded the motion, which passed unanimously. Court minutes note the Sandford Duncan Inn is counted among Kentucky’s top ten historical sites and is a tourism asset for Simpson County.
Tourism staff and the curator will coordinate the contractor and gravel purchase; the minutes indicate Tourism will report back after the work is completed. The work is scheduled to occur prior to the planned tour season (April–October).
