Snowflake council earmarks $2 million in ARPA funds for water and sewer projects; staff to clear bridge site to reduce flooding

The Town of Snowflake has received $2 million in federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds and is considering prioritizing water and sewer infrastructure to encourage future growth, council members said at a Oct. 26 worksession.
The council discussed restrictions on eligible ARPA uses and said the town hopes to secure additional ARPA allocations that Navajo County is sharing with communities. "The town has received $2 million of ARPA funds and is hoping to get additional ARPA funds that Navajo County is sharing with communities in the county," the worksession record shows.
Councilors expressed appreciation to staff for beginning planning that would target the restricted funds toward infrastructure work that could support growth in targeted areas. The meeting record notes staff will pursue smaller grants for ancillary projects, including a project described as the "Belly Button" sidewalk.
Mayor Lynn Johnson said town staff will work on clearing debris around the bridge on Concho Highway near 1st East as a step toward mitigating localized flooding. "Mayor Johnson feels that the clean out at the bridge is a worthwhile project and hopes to continue working to solve the flooding issues," the minutes state.
Next steps recorded in the worksession include further planning by staff for ARPA-eligible water and sewer projects and pursuing additional grants; no formal votes or budget decisions were recorded during the session.
The council adjourned at 8:32 p.m.
