Sheriff Jason Ramsey told the Bland County Board of Supervisors on Nov. 22 that the sheriff's office will use a pyrotechnic gun at dawn and dusk to encourage rehoming of black vultures in the county, and he also reported the resignation of a School Resource Officer.
"A pyrotechnic gun will be used at dawn and at dusk to encourage rehoming of the black vultures in Bland," Sheriff Ramsey said during the meeting. He also updated the board about the SRO resignation, a staffing change that may affect school coverage and department planning.
Cameron Burton, the county's Library and Community Services Director, briefed the board on plans tied to a statewide 250th Revolutionary War celebration running 2023 through 2026, ongoing grant applications, and the library's December community events. Burton said the library will host a parade, vendors and activities on Dec. 3, 2022, and that the parade is planned as an annual event on the first Saturday in December at noon.
During Supervisors' Time, the board voted to appropriate $400 from the Supervisors' Fund to support 4‑H Day at the Capitol. The motion by Keith Costello and seconded by Stephen Kelley passed on a roll call of three yeas and one abstention (Chairman Randy Johnson). The board also approved other routine communications and a newsletter earlier in the meeting.
The board did not take additional policy action on wildlife management or library programming during the Nov. 22 session; staff follow-up and program implementation were left to the appropriate departments.
