STEPS requests ARPA support from Heartland counties for Farmville homeless housing site

Shawn Rozier, vice president of housing at STEPS, Inc., presented a proposal to the Lunenburg County Board of Supervisors on Feb. 10 asking for $200,000 in American Rescue Plan Act funds from each of six Heartland Planning Group counties to support a homeless housing campus on West Third Street in Farmville.
Rozier outlined a preliminary plan calling for 11 small emergency shelter homes, three permanent supportive homes and a 1,380-square-foot community center. He said STEPS expects to begin construction within three months of securing funding and anticipates project completion in mid to late 2023. The proposal would serve the Heartland Planning Group region, including Lunenburg County.
Supervisor Alvester Edmonds said most local ARPA funds have been earmarked and suggested Administrator Gee and the county Finance Committee review STEPS’s request in the context of the upcoming budget. The board did not commit county ARPA funds at the meeting and left the request for committee review.
