Public hearing held on proposed Lunenburg County redistricting; vote expected in March

The Lunenburg County Board of Supervisors on Feb. 10 opened a public hearing on a proposed redistricting map and ordinance recommended by the county Redistricting Committee and then closed the hearing after receiving the legal explanation and procedural timeline.
Assistant County Attorney Drew DiStanislao reviewed the map and the ordinance, telling the board that Virginia law requires districts to be compact and concise. He said the most substantial changes would affect District Two (Brown’s Store) and District Six (Hounds Creek). DiStanislao also noted the proposed map placed two polling places outside their precincts but within the one-mile allowance in state code.
DiStanislao told the board that prison populations had been removed from the 2020 Census population counts and that removal had been a key factor in District Two’s population change. He reminded the board that state law requires 45 days notice for proposed changes and a 30-day public comment period; he said he would ask the board for a vote on the map and ordinance at the March meeting after the notice and comment periods conclude.
No public speakers spoke during the comment call when Chairman Charles R. Slayton opened the floor.
The board took no final redistricting vote on Feb. 10; a decision is expected at the March meeting following the statutory notice and comment windows.
