Board asks county attorney to press Meridian Waste after VDOT reports road repairs and paving

Kevin Smith of the Virginia Department of Transportation briefed the Board on routine maintenance and an emergency bridge repair that closed Reedy Creek Road (Route 671) between Wattsboro Circle Road and Irby Road; he also noted paving work under way on Tinkling Road in Kenbridge. Supervisor Robert Zava raised concerns about ditch washouts on Couches Creek Road.
Supervisor Edward Pennington asked the Board to take action on a long-running problem: Meridian Waste solid waste trucks continuing to travel on Mecklenburg Avenue. Smith and others explained that while officers can ticket for speeding, they cannot prevent use of a public road and that requests to classify a road as 'No Through Trucks' are seldom approved by the Transportation Board. After discussion the Board voted unanimously to have County Attorney Frank Rennie send a letter to Meridian Waste asking the company to remind drivers that solid waste trucks are not allowed on Mecklenburg Avenue.
The Board also directed VDOT to proceed with any actions the Board wishes regarding ditch and road maintenance and will include the truck routing concern in correspondence to the waste hauler. The VDOT report included both emergency and routine maintenance details that affect local travel and maintenance planning.
