Summary
The Board accepted a $50,000 USDA grant (with $50,000 local match) for police vehicles, accepted $39,888.15 in estate proceeds for the Sheriff’s capital fund, moved Meridian Waste donation funds to Project LUIS, approved VDOT plan public hearing and a resolution request for restricted truck routing, and set a June 2 public hearing to advertise the FY2023 budget.
At the May 12 meeting the Lunenburg County Board of Supervisors approved a number of administrative, budgetary and transportation actions.
The Board accepted a $50,000 USDA Community Facilities Program grant to purchase police vehicles, with a local match of $50,000 available in the Sheriff’s capital funds; the Board approved the required resolution to accept the grant. The Board also accepted $39,888.15 in proceeds from the Martin E. Spence Estate, received by the Sheriff for administrating the estate, and placed those proceeds into the Sheriff’s Office Capital Fund to help purchase new vehicles and equipment.
Administrator Tracy M. Gee briefed the Board on Meridian Waste community donations: the FY21 donation of $50,000 had been allocated $3,000 to help send the county baseball all-stars to Tennessee and $47,000 remained; the Board moved $47,000 from fund 316 into fund 215 to cover consulting fees for Project LUIS and agreed to dedicate the FY22 $50,000 donation also toward Project LUIS expenses.
On transportation, VDOT representative Kevin Smith reported bridge work on Route 671 (Reedy Creek Road) with an intended reopening by Memorial Day weekend and explained that calls flow through central dispatch before local offices are notified, which can affect quoted response times. The Board voted to hold a public hearing on the FY2022–29 VDOT Secondary Six-Year Plan and approved preparing a resolution requesting VDOT consider designating Mecklenburg Avenue as a restricted truck route to keep tractor-trailers hauling to the landfill off that road; additional 'Landfill' directional signs were ordered for the route.
The Board also reviewed administrative items including the final CSA audit (no financial findings), an animal shelter VDACS inspection with no findings, approval of a $2,500 cash match to apply for a $100,000 GO Virginia grant, and an acknowledgement that the CUP for Mimosa Lake Park had not been formally rescinded. The Board voted to advertise the FY2023 county budget and hold a public hearing on June 2, 2022 at 6:00 p.m.
Nearly all motions in the meeting were approved unanimously with seven supervisors voting yes and none voting no, as recorded in the minutes.
