Board adopts VDOT Secondary Six‑Year Plan after hearing on rising construction costs

The board entered a public hearing June 9 to consider the Secondary Six‑Year Plan for fiscal years 2022/23 through 2028/29 and the Secondary System Construction Program Budget for FY2022-23. Kevin Smith of the Virginia Department of Transportation told the board that construction estimates from the prior year—about $3.1 million—had been challenged by steep increases in fuel and materials costs over the past 12 months. Smith recommended applying additional funds to projects already on the plan rather than adding new roads so the county can complete scheduled projects.
The board unanimously approved the Secondary Six‑Year Plan and the related FY2022-23 construction program budget and adopted the supporting resolution. In his monthly report, Smith also noted completed bridge repairs on Reedy Creek Road, improvements on Tinkling Road, and imminent construction on Renrut Road; Supervisor Edward Pennington thanked VDOT for new signage on the truck route and Mecklenburg Avenue.
The board said it will wait to request a VDOT 'no through trucks' posting on Mecklenburg Avenue until the Town of Victoria decides whether to proceed with that request.
