Board adopts FY2022-23 budget, appropriates school grant funds and raises county administrator’s salary

The Lunenburg County Board of Supervisors on June 9 adopted the FY2022-23 county budget, with the board specifying that school system funds be appropriated only for the first six months pending a subsequent public hearing on the school budget adjustment.
Assistant School Superintendent and Finance Director James Abernathy reported that continued ESSER II reimbursements are funding HVAC work at elementary schools and that state budget action increased state revenues for the school division. Abernathy requested a supplemental appropriation of a $37,000 CTE Competitive Innovative Program Equipment Grant that did not require additional local funds; the board unanimously appropriated that grant to the FY2022 School Board budget, revising the total to $24,161,226.93.
Supervisor Robert Zava noted the state funding increase will raise the school system’s required local match by more than $300,000 — an amount equal to roughly a four‑cent increase in the real‑estate tax rate — and said county revenue sources such as the landfill sale and solar projects have helped the county avoid raising property taxes.
Following a closed-session personnel evaluation, the board voted in open session to increase County Administrator Tracy M. Gee’s salary for FY2022-23 by $10,000.
The board indicated it will hold a public hearing at its July meeting to consider the school budget adjustment once the School Board finalizes its figures.
