LUNENBURG, Va. — STEPS, Inc., the regional community action agency, asked the Lunenburg County Board of Supervisors on Nov. 10 for a $50,000 contribution from county ARPA funds (or another county source) toward a proposed tiny-home village to serve people experiencing homelessness.
Sharon Harrup, CEO of STEPS, told the board that the organization has been named the area Homeless Solutions Program provider and has raised $468,833 from grants and donations outside member-local ARPA funds. STEPS requested a reduced local contribution and asked the county to consider a one-time allocation separate from STEPS’s annual community action funding.
STEPS Vice-President of Housing Shawn Rozier described recent sheltering and rental-assistance activity: the organization provided emergency shelter for 42 individuals in 13 households in the most recent fiscal year and assisted households with $59,838.95 in rent and mortgage relief through pandemic-era programs.
Board members said the request was outside the normal budget timetable and recommended review by the Finance Committee; no county appropriation was made at the meeting.
