LUNENBURG, Va. — The Lunenburg County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved Conditional Use Permit 3-22 for Robert McQuillan III, enabling Funky Fungi Foods to operate a retail store and shop/personal service business (restaurant) at 848 Free State Road in Meherrin.
Attorney Tessie Bacon represented McQuillan in the public hearing and told the board the applicant plans to sell gourmet mushrooms to restaurants as a first step and later open a restaurant. The Planning Commission recommended approval with conditions focused on health and safety compliance.
Conditions the board adopted require adherence to fire-code maximum occupancy; adequate fire and EMS access to the parking area, building and surrounding parcel; compliance with Virginia Department of Health (VDH) rules and inspections for food preparation and service (including a certified Food Protection Manager, food service permit, plan review, approved equipment and regular VDH inspections); building and electrical permits within 30 days of CUP approval; compliance with VDOT commercial-entrance regulations; required business licensing and Commissioner of the Revenue notification; determination of ADA compliance for mobile food units; pursuit of Virginia’s Finest certification if applicable; proof of insurance; and a pre-operation walkthrough by the Director of Planning and Economic Development to verify compliance.
The board approved the CUP on a motion by Supervisor Mike Hankins, seconded by Supervisor Robert Zava; all members present voted yes (Bacon, Edmonds, Hankins, Pennington, Slayton, Zava).
