Mackinac County commissioners approve routine business, purchase plow truck and several budget amendments

The Mackinac County Board of Commissioners met Nov. 13 in St. Ignace and approved a slate of routine business, including authorization for a new bank account for the Big Manistique Lakes Dam special assessment roll and the purchase of a new county plow truck.
Chair Mike Patrick called the meeting to order at 4:30 p.m.; Commissioners Austin Kimberling, John Kling, Daryl Schroeder and Judy St. Louis-Scott were present. Treasurer Tina Massey asked the board to authorize a new account for the Big Manistique Lakes Dam special assessment roll; the board voted unanimously to allow Massey to open the account at First National Bank.
The board reviewed and approved final road-match agreements and authorized Chair Patrick to sign them after discussion about a Mackinac Island request for additional funding beyond the standard $10,000 match. Commissioners said giving extra funding to one jurisdiction would be unfair to others and proceeded with a unanimous roll-call authorization.
The board also approved a final draft of the Brownfield Authority by-laws and authorized Chair Patrick to sign them. Clerk Hillary Vowell presented bids for a new county plow truck; after noting several bids did not meet specifications, the board approved the bid from Sara Jones Ford of St. Ignace for $46,962 plus $8,150 for a V-plow.
Members reviewed salary resolutions and decided to keep elected and non-elected salary levels the same as 2025 until the final budget is adopted; both resolutions were approved as presented and will be revisited with the final budget. The board approved regular bills dated Nov. 6 totaling $364,438.88 and additional Nov. 13 bills totaling $105,228.33. The board also approved budget amendments #2025-37, #2025-38 and #2025-39.
Commissioner Daryl Schroeder thanked the board for support of a Veterans Ceremony and noted scheduling changes: the second November meeting was canceled; the next regular meeting is set for Monday, Dec. 8 at noon, with a second Dec. 22 meeting at noon. The meeting adjourned at 5:52 p.m.
What’s next: Several approvals were recorded as unanimous roll-call votes; the board plans to revisit salary levels during final budget deliberations.
