Under Sheriff Ron Umbarger presented five bids for a new School Resource Officer patrol vehicle for the Les Cheneaux Community School on Jan. 8; the bids ranged from $42,190 to $47,900 and the Sheriff’s office will select a preferred vendor and return with a recommendation at the next meeting.
The board unanimously approved the 2026 Michigan Indigent Defense Commission compliance plan after a presentation from MIDC Administrator Cha Peltier. Commissioners also approved the 2026 committee and liaison appointments unchanged from 2025 and discussed proposed edits to the board rules; the board tabled final approval of the board‑rules changes pending a later, more detailed draft.
Commissioner nominations for vice chair produced three votes for Commissioner John Kling, who was elected Vice Chair for 2026. The board reviewed communications including an attorney opinion on the courtroom remodel loan process and the December animal shelter report; it then approved regular bills of $421,891.20 and additional bills of $216,050.65. Chair Mike Patrick said the county has been consulting attorneys frequently and that legal costs should be reduced.
