Mackinac County commissioners terminate animal shelter employee, approve clerk staffing change and appoint magistrate

Mackinac County commissioners voted unanimously on Feb. 12 to terminate an animal shelter employee and to approve several staffing and appointment actions affecting county operations and the courts.
The board held a Loudermill hearing Feb. 5 with animal shelter employee Donna DesJardins to allow her to respond to allegations of wrongdoing during her employment. Following the hearing commissioners Mike Patrick and Daryl Schroeder moved to terminate DesJardins’ employment effective immediately; the motion passed on a unanimous roll call (Kimberling, Kling, Patrick, Schroeder, St. Louis-Scott).
County Clerk Hillary Vowell presented a new Deputy Clerk job description the board approved after commissioners agreed to reclassify the Circuit Court Clerk as a non-union court employee and permit the County Clerk to hire a new union Deputy Clerk at pay grade 5, step 1. Vowell said the position was created because of court consolidation and the Circuit Court Clerk’s move to a different office.
District Court Administrator Christine Bawol presented a resolution appointing Nick Adams to magistrate; the board approved the appointment by unanimous roll call. The board also appointed Heidi Janz to the Hiawatha Behavioral Health Board for a three-year term.
Longtime medical examiner Dr. Carl Hawkins submitted a letter of retirement and offered to assist the county in identifying a replacement. Deputy Medical Examiner Mark Wilk was in attendance to answer commissioners’ questions. Clerk Vowell said she would contact other county clerks to explore a potential multi-county agreement for medical examiner services.
The personnel actions were taken by formal motions recorded in the meeting minutes; the board did not specify timelines for filling the vacancies created by the approved changes and the retirement.
