County says EGLE signaled opposition to Point Betsie Lighthouse permit; county to withdraw and resubmit

County Administrator Katie Zeits told commissioners May 14 that the Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) has signaled it will deny the permit for the Point Betsie Lighthouse project and has suggested the lighthouse needs to be moved. Zeits said the county will withdraw the current application to avoid a formal denial and will resubmit the application. She said EGLE’s position shifted as personnel changed at the agency and that county staff plan to reach out to the county’s U.S. senators to explore possible support.
Zeits also reported other administrative items: the state Attorney General’s office will hold a roundtable at the Government Center on July 5 about how opioid settlement dollars were spent in Benzie County, IT firewall and switch work is underway, probation/parole office furniture delivery and move are imminent, and the county is preparing for insurance renewal and the FY2024–25 budget process.
The administrator framed the Point Betsie action as a permitting disagreement with EGLE rather than a final denial and described the county’s next step as withdrawing and re-submitting the permit application.
