Benzie County approves elevator, HVAC replacements and dispatch radio purchases

Benzie County commissioners on April 9 approved several facility and public-safety equipment projects, moving forward a multi-part plan that county officials said preserves service and addresses deferred maintenance.
The board accepted a Kone proposal for an elevator hydro modification in the governmental center not to exceed $110,000, with funds to come from the county’s capital fund. Commissioners also accepted Hurst Mechanical’s proposal to replace two rooftop heating and cooling units (RTU#4 and RTU#5) with funding from capital projects and ARPA.
In fleet and equipment actions, the board declared a 2015 Dodge Journey (VIN ending 6725) surplus for sale on the MI Bid platform; proceeds will be deposited to the vehicle replacement fund. The board also declared three Telex generation-two dispatch radios surplus and authorized their sale with proceeds to the Central Dispatch fund.
Cory Ellis, Central Dispatch Director, asked for and received approval to purchase two Kenwood VP8000 portable radios, not to exceed $12,750, with funds available in the Central Dispatch fund. The board also approved maintaining a $3.00 per device surcharge for Central Dispatch operations from July 2024 to June 2025 and authorized the county clerk and dispatch director to sign paperwork for submission to the State of Michigan.
All measures passed by roll call with ayes from Commissioners Cunningham, Jeannot, Nye, Roelofs, Sauer and Warsecke; Commissioner Markey was excused for the votes cited.
The approvals address capital maintenance priorities and replace aging public-safety equipment while preserving funding mechanisms for Central Dispatch operations.
