Probate judge seeks re-election; county to host harm-reduction and fraud-prevention sessions

At the start of the July 23 meeting, Hon. John D. Mead, Benzie County Probate Judge, said he is seeking re-election and summarized the duties of the probate judge position along with his education and local background.
Emergency Management Director Rebecca Hubers said she will host two public events at the Benzie County Government Center: a Harm Reduction presentation on Aug. 14, 2024, at 6:00 p.m. focusing on naloxone use and overdose recognition, and a Public Awareness presentation on Aug. 21, 2024, at 6:00 p.m. with information to help residents avoid scams and fraud attempts. Hubers also reported the Emergency Tower groundbreaking went well and that the tower structure is expected within the next three months before wiring.
County Administrator Katie Zeits told commissioners Benzie County relies heavily on grants; she plans to contact Manistee County about its grant-writer approach, consult local officials, and return with a recommendation on forming a work group or task force to support grant activity.
