Barry County approves 2025 MSU Extension agreement, routine claims and reappointments

The Barry County Board of Commissioners on Nov. 26 approved a 2025 Memorandum of Agreement with Michigan State University Extension and completed routine county business, including payment of claims and several reappointments.
Commissioner Jon Smelker moved and Vice Chair David Hatfield supported approval of the 2025 MOA with Michigan State University Extension; the board approved the agreement by unanimous roll-call vote. The MOA was listed initially under Consent Items but, at the request of Commissioner Mark Doster, was moved for separate consideration and voted on as an Item for Consideration.
The board also approved claims totaling $94,179.48 after a motion by Smelker supported by Commissioner Catherine Getty. Consent Items approved earlier in the meeting included the Nov. 12, 2024 meeting minutes; a revised 2024 Apportionment Report; authorization for the Equalization Department to retain two Appraiser positions until one meets Senior Appraiser qualifications; four PA 116 farmland/open-space preservation applications for property owned by Michael Pickard in Irving Township (applications #24-2 through #24-5); approval of a quote from Casper Corporation for purchase and installation of a rolling file system for $34,628.51 to be paid from the CPL fund; adoption of a Credit Card policy as required by PA 266 of 1995; and reappointments to the Barry County Building Authority and Brownfield Redevelopment Authority.
The minutes record roll-call votes approving the consent package as amended and recording reappointments: David Tripp was reappointed to the Barry County Building Authority for a three-year term beginning Jan. 1, 2025, and Cindy Vujea and David Jackson were reappointed to the Brownfield Redevelopment Authority for three-year terms beginning Jan. 1, 2025 and ending Dec. 31, 2027.
Limited public comment during the meeting included residents raising concerns about deputy and corrections officer pay scales and questions about chief deputy positions. The minutes do not show that any of the consent items were delayed or amended during discussion beyond the procedural move of the MSU Extension MOA into Items for Consideration.
