The Barry County Committee of the Whole on Jan. 21 recommended several personnel and appointment actions to the Board of Commissioners, approving job reclassifications, a full-time conversion, and authority appointments.
Commissioner Bruce Campbell moved, and Commissioner Mike Callton supported, a recommendation to approve a revised Deputy Drain Commissioner job description and reclassify the position from pay grade 7 to pay grade 8 on the BCCEA pay scale. The Committee recorded all ayes with Commissioner Jon Smelker absent.
The Committee also approved a revised job description and title change for the Drain Maintenance position (from Drain Maintenance Worker to Drain Maintenance Technician) and reclassified that role from pay grade 3 to pay grade 2. That motion was moved by Commissioner Bob Teunessen and supported by Commissioner Catherine Getty. Separately, the Committee approved increasing the Drain Maintenance Technician position from 0.875 FTE to 1.00 FTE; that motion was moved by Commissioner Mike Callton and supported by Commissioner David Hatfield. Both motions passed unanimously among present commissioners.
County Administrator Eric Zuzga moved to remove former Barry County Treasurer Susan VandeCar from the Barry County Building Authority and appoint current Barry County Treasurer Kelli Shumway to the Building Authority for the three-year term that began Jan. 1, 2023 and ends Dec. 31, 2025. Commissioner David Hatfield supported that recommendation; the Committee approved the recommendation with all ayes and one commissioner absent.
Finally, the Committee recommended reappointment of Cindy Vujea, Chelsey Foster and Jeff Keesler to three-year terms on the Barry County Land Bank Authority beginning May 1, 2025 and ending April 30, 2028. Commissioner Catherine Getty moved the recommendation and Commissioner David Hatfield supported it; the Committee recorded all ayes with Jon Smelker absent.
These committee recommendations will be forwarded to the full Board of Commissioners for formal action. Several individuals applied or were interviewed for board and commission vacancies; some applicants were not present and their applications were included in the meeting packet for the Board’s review.
