Houghton County approves health and mental-health appropriations, 911 pager purchase and cybersecurity payment

The Houghton County Board of Commissioners approved several budget and appropriation items at its July 18 meeting, voting unanimously on a series of payments to public-health and emergency-services partners.
The board approved a $272,324 appropriation for the Western U.P. Health Department for the 2023–2024 year and a $164,495 appropriation for Copper Country Mental Health. Commissioners also approved quarterly and program-specific payments later in the meeting, including MSU Extension fourth-quarter payment of $10,625 and a Western U.P. Health Department July–September payment of $68,024.50.
On emergency communications, the 911 Advisory Board recommended purchasing 800 MHz pagers to address coverage problems in the Village of Calumet and Laurium; the County authorized $51,063 from the 911 Fund to buy the pagers. Commissioner Roy Britz introduced the 2023–2024 health department appropriation motion; the pager purchase was moved by Commissioner Keranen and seconded by Commissioner Anderson. All recorded motions passed 5–0.
The board also approved a $14,783.75 payment to Karhu Cyber to be paid with ARPA funds, and approved routine travel requests (FOC training $1,400; Administrator MERS conference $455). Chairman Tikkanen noted the Karhu Cyber June 2023 report included in commissioners’ packets is labeled For Official Use Only and not subject to FOIA.
