Houghton County appoints planning commissioners and canvassers; schedules Sept. 21 budget hearing

The Houghton County Board of Commissioners made several governance appointments and scheduled a special meeting for the FY24 budget public hearing.
On Sept. 12, Commissioner Joel Keranen moved to appoint Michael J. Erickson to the Houghton County Planning Commission (Environmental seat); the motion passed 3-2, with Commissioners Keranen, Roy Britz and Chairman Tom Tikkanen voting yes and Commissioners Glenn Anderson and Gretchen Janssen voting no. For an Economic Development & Tourism vacancy, the board appointed Steve Aho over other applicants (Mark Larson and Frank Fiala were mentioned), again on a 3-2 vote. Commissioner Glenn Anderson said he preferred a different candidate in the Economic & Tourism appointment.
The board reappointed Sharon Foix and Joan Antila to the Houghton County Canvassing Board for four-year terms after a paper-ballot vote; County Clerk Jennifer Kelly will notify the appointees. The board also agreed to a special meeting on Thursday, Sept. 21, 2023 at 12:00 p.m. to hold the FY24 budget public hearing.
Other routine items approved during the meeting included the MDIC contract, the 2024 County Veteran Service Fund grant approval, UPCAP dues of $1,100 for 2024, travel requests for staff and assorted appropriations. The meeting adjourned at 5:07 p.m.
