Houghton County announces annex talks, courthouse security upgrades and new air-conditioning unit

At the Sept. 21 special meeting Administrator Ben Larson announced three operational items: ongoing discussions with Portage Township Supervisor Bruce Peterson and City of Houghton Manager Eric Waara about annexing a six-acre parcel on Sharon Avenue, planned courthouse security improvements including metal detection and electronic door access via employee ID badges, and installation of a new air-conditioning unit.
Larson said attorneys are finalizing an agreement for the annex; he also described planned security hardware: 'security eyes' at three doors and 15 additional monitoring points throughout courthouse offices. The board did not take formal action on these items at the meeting; Larson indicated implementation steps would follow and that badges would be rolled out to employees in the coming weeks.
