The Houghton County Board took a series of routine financial and administrative votes on Oct. 10. Key outcomes:
• Bills approved: The board voted to pay bills totaling $5,003,963.25 (motion by Commissioner Anderson; seconded by Commissioner Janssen). Roll-call recorded yes votes from Anderson, Janssen, Tikkanen and Keranen; one commissioner was absent.
• Sale of 1999 Western Star: One sealed bid from Schaaf Trucking & Repair for $7,777.77 was accepted after staff recommendation; motion by Commissioner Anderson, second by Commissioner Janssen; roll-call vote 4–0.
• FY24 County Innovation Grant (VA Office): The board accepted a $56,649.30 grant for Oct. 1, 2023–Sept. 30, 2024 on a reimbursement basis to be administered by County VSO Joe Battisfore (motion carried by voice vote).
• Benefit E COLA Defined Benefit Adoption Agreement: The board approved annual COLA adoption for 2024 (motion carried by roll-call, 4–0).
• Building Department vehicle purchase: Approved purchase of a 2024 Chevrolet truck from Keweenaw Chevrolet using Building Department funds (motion by Keranen, second by Anderson; roll-call 4–0).
• Travel authorizations: County Clerk Jennifer Kelly authorized to attend UCOA Fall Conference ($1,010) and a Software User Group meeting ($131); voice vote carried.
• Appropriations: Approved $68,081 to Western UP Health Department and $400 to the Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce (voice vote carried).
