Grant County reports successful 29th annual Bug Day; 268,000 beetles distributed

Grant County Weed Board members on July 15 heard a report on the 29th annual Bug Day, held July 1 at the Boy Scouts area at Lake Tschida, where organizers distributed 268,000 beetles as part of biological control outreach.
Merlin Leithold said the event drew well over 100 people and that partners including the Morton County Weed Department, three staff members from the North Dakota Department of Agriculture and Tanya from USDA APHIS PPQ assisted. Organizers used four sorters with three additional volunteers on standby. According to the minutes, adults received two bags at 3,000 beetles per bag intended for two sites; the total number of beetles handed out was recorded as 268,000.
Tessa Osterbauer of NDSU Extension attended and performed several water tests at Bug Day; Merlin thanked her during the report. The board characterized the weather as favorable for the event and said the distribution plan and volunteer coordination worked well.
No formal vote was required for the Bug Day report. The board’s next meeting is scheduled for Sept. 16, 2025, at 8:00 p.m. MDT at the Carson courthouse.
