Demolition derby pitched for Laketown Rodeo Arena; council weighs permits, schedule and fees

Max Massey (joining by Zoom) proposed organizing a demolition derby or family rodeo at the Laketown Rodeo Arena and said he has experience staging similar events with a partnering car-restoration company. Lisa Johnson, the town clerk, explained that a mass-gathering permit from the Bear River Health Department is required when an event is held at a venue not designed for the event’s specific needs, and that the permit covers emergency plans, waste management, food safety and first-aid planning.
Council members expressed concerns about a proposed July 24 date because it conflicts with Raspberry Days weekend and questioned whether there would be adequate time to restore the arena for the Raspberry Days Rodeo. They also raised operational issues including liability coverage, ticketing, parking, sale of alcohol, vendor management, and repairing any damage to the arena or grandstands. The council suggested Max consider Labor Day weekend as an alternative date and asked town staff to draft a mass-gathering permit template, an event permit process and a fee schedule for arena rentals.
No permit was approved at the Feb. 4 meeting. Council members indicated they need more information about potential fees, insurance requirements and event restoration responsibilities before approving any event at the arena. The clerk was assigned to place the item on next month’s agenda with permit language and proposed fee levels.
