Morton County Commission OKs $355,409.62 carryover for sheriff vehicles, adds staff and approves liquor licenses

The Morton County Commission on Dec. 14 authorized a $355,409.62 carryover for sheriff vehicle purchases, approved an additional sheriff FTE, agreed to buy a radio repeater from 911 funds, accepted an Infant Friendly Workplace grant, and approved several abatements and 2024 liquor licenses. All motions carried unanimously; one commissioner was absent.
Chairman Nathan Boehm called the Morton County Commission to order at 5:31 p.m. Thursday at the Morton County Courthouse in Mandan.
The meeting’s most significant fiscal action authorized the County Auditor to carry over $355,409.62 from the 2023 budget to 2024 to cover sheriff vehicle purchases and equipment installation because the vehicles had not yet arrived. Commissioner Morrell moved the carryover and Commissioner Zachmeier seconded; the motion passed with all voting aye. Commissioner Buckley was absent.
The commission also authorized the Sheriff’s Department to add an additional full-time equivalent position to address staffing needs. Commissioner Morrell moved the staffing authorization; Commissioner Zachmeier seconded, and the motion passed unanimously.
On equipment, the commission approved a $19,464.00 expenditure from 911 funds to purchase a radio repeater. The board also authorized the sheriff to retain the existing repeater as a source of serviceable parts. That motion passed unanimously.
Right-of-way and temporary easement offers totaling $2,100.00 were approved for the Starck Bridge Replacement project (30143-19.0). The commission accepted the Infant Friendly Workplace Grant LOA 2023-24 and approved a series of tax abatements, including Veterans Credit abatement #6296 and Homestead Credit abatement #6297.
The board approved 2024 liquor licenses for The Watering Hole; Rusty’s Saloon & Grill LLC; Dakota Leathernecks Detachment #1419, Marine Corps League; and Huff Hills Ski Area, Inc. All motions were moved, seconded and carried by unanimous vote of those present.
The county reported total funds expended from Nov. 29 through Dec. 14, 2023 of $3,041,763.87, and the commission noted a detailed list of checks is available for public inspection at the Morton County Auditor’s Office during regular business hours. Chairman Boehm adjourned the meeting at 6:27 p.m.
