Morton County Commission reelects chair, names Buckley vice-chair; approves subdivisions, abatements and liquor licenses

The Morton County Commission unanimously reappointed Nathan Boehm as chair and elected Commissioner Buckley as vice-chair at its regular meeting on Jan. 11, 2024, at the Morton County Courthouse in Mandan. The board approved routine business including the agenda, minutes and bills before turning to reorganization and other agenda items.
Auditor Dawn R. Rhone presided over nominations for chair and vice-chair. Commissioner Leingang nominated Boehm for chair; Commissioner Zachmeier moved and Commissioner Morrell seconded to cease nominations and cast a unanimous ballot, reappointing Boehm. For vice-chair, Leingang nominated Zachmeier and Morrell nominated Buckley; ballots were cast and Buckley was elected vice-chair.
The commission approved a slate of property tax abatements, including numbers 6298–6305, 6313–6317, 6312, 6306–6309, 6310–6311 and 6318–6319. Each abatement motion carried with all members voting aye.
On infrastructure, the board approved the selection committee’s recommendation to award construction engineering for Project BRC-3020(080) (PCN 23734), the Starck Bridge (Br No. 30-143-19.0, near Judson), to Sauber Engineering. Commissioners stated the recommendation came from the selection committee and the motion passed unanimously.
Several short-form subdivisions and associated zoning map amendments from Agricultural to Residential were approved after findings the plats conform to Article 7 of the Morton County Land Use Code and the 2045 Comprehensive Plan: Dallas Second Subdivision, Quam Subdivision and Sturn 3rd Subdivision. The board also approved a petition to vacate a section line between Section 13 and Section 24, Township 139N, Range 84W, noting the line is not used due to terrain constraints.
The commission denied a variance request for a shop addition on Lot 2, Block 2 of Schlosser’s 4th Subdivision; the motion to deny carried unanimously. Commissioners also approved 2024 liquor licenses for the Wet Spot and for Venue 25.
The auditor reported total county expenditures of $13,084,871.73 for the period Dec. 26, 2023, through Jan. 12, 2024. A detailed check register is available for public inspection during regular business hours at the Morton County Auditor’s Office. The meeting adjourned at 7:21 p.m.
