Sumter County Council approves small rezoning for garden center at 1700 Peach Orchard Road

Sumter County Council granted second‑reading approval on Jan. 24 to RZ‑22‑13, rezoning a roughly 0.22‑acre portion of TMS# 133‑15‑02‑036 at 1700 Peach Orchard Road from Agricultural Conservation (AC) to General Commercial (GC).
Helen Roodman, Sumter County Planning Director, told council the request from property owner Gayle Langan would eliminate split zoning on the parcel; the larger part of the parcel is already zoned General Commercial. Roodman said the surrounding area includes a mix of residential, agricultural, commercial and military lands and that Planning staff supports the request as a reasonable consolidation of zoning categories.
Roodman said the applicant intends to establish a garden center nursery on the rezoned portion. The applicant was present for the public hearing. Councilman Carlton B. Washington asked the Planning Director whether the planning staff and commission supported the rezoning; Roodman replied that staff believed the request "makes sense" so the parcel would have a single zoning designation.
On motion by Councilman Artie Baker, seconded by Councilman Eugene R. Baten, Council carried the motion unanimously.
