Residents urge Sumter County to fund transit route and act on Highway 76/378 safety

Williams said she spoke with Lottie Jones of the Santee Wateree Regional Transportation Authority (SWRTA), who identified federal funds that could support a new route but said the City and County would need to provide matching funds. Williams asked council to budget $2,000,000 to secure a new transit route to serve Walnut Hill and nearby neighborhoods.
Rev. Padmore asked council for an update on actions by the City and County after a child was killed last year while crossing Highway 76/378 and said other families present had lost relatives attempting to cross that highway. Chairman James T. McCain, Jr. told Rev. Padmore he would speak with her after the meeting.
Council did not take immediate action on these requests at the meeting; both items remain matters for staff follow-up and potential inclusion in the county budget process.
