McCain retained as Sumter County Council chairman; Byrd elected vice chairman

At its Jan. 10 meeting, Sumter County Council re-elected James T. McCain Jr. as chairman and elected James R. Byrd as vice chairman in show-of-hands votes; counts recorded one opposition and one abstention on the two officer elections.
James T. McCain Jr. was elected chairman of Sumter County Council for 2023–2024 after a nomination by Councilman Artie Baker and a show-of-hands vote recorded as six in favor and one opposed. James R. Byrd was elected vice chairman after a nomination by Baker and a recorded vote of five in favor, one opposed and one abstention.
The vote tallies were recorded by name in the minutes: in the chairman vote Council Members Washington, Baker, Byrd, McCain, Edens and McGhaney voted in favor and Councilman Baten opposed. In the vice chairman vote Council Members Baker, Byrd, McCain, Edens and McGhaney voted in favor, Councilman Baten opposed and Councilman Washington abstained.
The officer elections were handled at the start of the regular meeting after approval of the agenda and minutes. The council proceeded to conduct business on land-use, budget and other agenda items following the officer elections.
