Sumter County Council unanimously approved a proclamation on Feb. 28 declaring February 2023 as Black History Month in Sumter County.
Councilman Eugene R. Baten sponsored the proclamation and noted local figures including U.S. Rep. James E. Clyburn, Justice Ernest Finney Jr., Tuskegee Airman Leroy Bowman, Mary McLeod Bethune and local Negro League player Russell "Crazy Leg" Patterson as examples of the county's African American heritage. The proclamation cites the national observance originating with Dr. Carter G. Woodson and encourages residents to observe the month and acknowledge African American contributions to the community.
The resolution was approved by unanimous vote.
