Councilman says community members want part of Delaine Elementary explored as community center after tour

Councilman Carlton B. Washington told Sumter County Council on May 9 that he and roughly 100 community members toured Delaine Elementary School with representatives from Sumter School District and were impressed with the building's condition. Washington said the group expressed interest in using the north end of the facility as a community center and that he will discuss the idea with County Administrator Gary Mixon and Council Chairman James T. McCain, Jr.
Washington praised the school tour and specifically said, "Dr. Wright did an excellent job in handling the tour for those that were present." He said community members were pleased with amenities and the building's maintenance. Washington also noted he arrived late to the council meeting because the tour ran long.
No formal council action or direction was recorded at the meeting; Washington described his intent to follow up with administration and the chair so the idea can be explored further.
