Residents and stakeholders addressed the Whitfield County Board of Commissioners about a proposed Tax Allocation District (TAD) with the City of Varnell during public comment Feb. 16. Speakers expressed both opposition and support before the board considered a motion to enter a TAD agreement.
Larry Swanson spoke against the Varnell TAD; several other residents—Dean Stamper, Sarah Harrison, Joe Yarbrough, Brian Spense, Mitch Stanford, Smith Barnett and Morgan Lewis—spoke in favor. Karen Roark asked that the county provide more public education about how a TAD functions. Gary Mongeon of KB Advisory Group responded to questions on the mechanics of TADs.
Following public comment, Commissioner Barry W. Robbins moved to approve entering a Tax Allocation District agreement with the City of Varnell. The motion failed to receive a second and therefore died for lack of a second; no formal vote was taken to approve the agreement. The minutes record the motion’s failure and show no further action on the matter at that meeting.
