County OKs intersection design contract and Riverbend site upgrades

The Whitfield County Board of Commissioners approved two infrastructure-related items on May 9.
The board authorized design services by Atlas under the county's On-Call Services agreement for $56,350 to redesign the Houston Valley Road and Mt. Vernon Road intersection in the Westside community. The project scope includes field surveys, roadway and signal design, addition of turn lanes on all four legs, utility coordination and bid-ready construction plans. Commissioner Barry W. Robbins moved the contract approval; Commissioner Robby Staten seconded and the motion passed 3-0.
Separately, the board ratified a change order for the Riverbend property purchased last year to add a small staff and emergency parking lot behind the fields, add up to 100 additional parking spots beside the softball fields not to exceed $60,000, and add a new permanent sign not to exceed $4,000. The action was ratified 3-0.
Both items were approved without dissent; the board did not set construction start dates during the meeting and directed staff to proceed with procurement and scheduling per county procedures.
