Board approves intergovernmental agreement for up to eight school resource officers

At its May 9 meeting the Whitfield County Board of Commissioners approved an intergovernmental agreement (IGA) with the Whitfield County Board of Education that allows the School Board to request assignment of up to eight sheriff's deputies as School Resource Officers (SROs).
Under the agreement, the School Board will reimburse the county monthly for the actual wages paid to assigned deputies — including overtime for time worked at school locations or functions — and will pay a supplemental amount equal to 35% of those wages to offset a portion of county-paid benefits. The School Board will not reimburse the county for deputies' paid time off or costs such as uniforms and mileage. The IGA also contemplates designation of one sheriff's detective as a School Detective/School Safety Specialist (if the Sheriff agrees) with monthly wage reimbursement but no supplemental benefit offset, and up to three deputies serving as DARE officers without School Board wage reimbursement.
Commissioner Barry W. Robbins moved to approve the IGA; Commissioner Robby Staten seconded the motion, which passed 3-0. The motion authorizes the county to execute the agreement and receive reimbursements per its terms.
The IGA places responsibility for assignment and scheduling on the Sheriff and School Board; the Board did not specify dollar totals or identify individual deputies at the meeting.
