Whitfield County board approves March financials as tax collections outpace projections

The Whitfield County Board of Commissioners approved the March 2022 financial statement at its May 9 regular meeting.
Finance Director James Garvin told the board that March Local Option Sales Tax (LOST) collections totaled $1,232,231 — 16% higher than the budgeted $1,062,500 — and that TAVT collections for March were $464,329. Garvin said year-to-date actual revenues were $8,538,524 versus projected revenues of $8,461,964, while YTD expenditures were $11,682,564.
The figures prompted no formal objections and the motion to accept the financials carried 3-0, with Commissioner Robby Staten making the motion and Commissioner Barry W. Robbins seconding.
The meeting also included brief administrative updates relevant to county finances: Chairman Jevin Jensen noted the animal shelter opening scheduled for June 10 is funded by the 2020 SPLOST, and County Administrator Robert Sivick provided an update on the THRIVE Regional Partnership's plan to expand broadband in rural communities, including Whitfield County. The board did not vote on any budget amendments during this session.
The board approved the financial statement and proceeded to other agenda items. The county will publish the complete financial packet with supporting schedules per standard county practice.
