Whitfield County OKs $1.1 million in parks and road projects, appoints interim public works director

At its July 11 meeting the Whitfield County Board of Commissioners approved several infrastructure and public-works expenditures and named an interim Public Works director following a resignation.
The board approved $307,000 for athletic field lighting at Westside Park through Mucsco Lighting under a Sourcewell cooperative agreement and $486,225 for a FIFA-grade turf surface from Shaw Sports Turf under a cooperative purchasing plan. Commissioners also approved up to $4,000 from SPLOST for signage at Edwards Park. All park purchases were approved 3-0 and the minutes indicate funding through SPLOST sources.
For roads, the board awarded the McGaughey-Chapel Road & Old Prater Mill Road intersection improvement contract to Bartow Paving for $298,095.44 using 2020 SPLOST funds and approved a $12,000 professional services agreement with Southeastern Engineering, Inc. for Creeks Edge subdivision resurfacing plan development, geotechnical work and contract documents.
The board approved a $33,986.01 GSA purchase of an Alpha 2 restroom/shower trailer for the Fire Department using SPLOST 2020 funds; delivery under the GSA purchasing contract (GS-07F-325AA) was estimated at 6–8 weeks. Commissioners said the trailer will be used during station renovations and at the training facility, and will mitigate restroom access issues caused by septic problems during heavy rains.
Following the resignation of Dewayne Hunt effective June 30, the board appointed Steve Bratton — described as five years with the Public Works Department and second in command — as interim Public Works director (vote 3-0). County Engineer Kent Bensen provided project-status updates including options to improve safety on Dawnville Beaverdale Road and courthouse parking-deck facade repairs.
What happens next: staff will execute cooperative-purchase contracts, schedule deliveries and begin engineering and construction work funded by SPLOST; the interim director will oversee ongoing public-works projects until a permanent appointment is made.
