Whitfield County approves public safety grant application, juvenile prevention award and assessor appointment

At its Oct. 6 meeting the Whitfield County Board of Commissioners approved a package of grant actions, an appointment to the Board of Assessors and adopted updated Service Delivery Strategy agreements with municipalities.
The board approved a resolution to apply for Georgia’s Public Safety and Community Violence Reduction Grant, funded through ARPA, with a maximum award of $1.5 million. The grant, if awarded, would cover salary and benefits to fill law-enforcement positions that existed on Jan. 27, 2020 but were unfilled as of March 3, 2021; it is not intended to fund newly created positions. The minutes note that funding — if awarded — would begin in 2023 (depending on hire dates) and end Oct. 31, 2026, after which the county would be responsible for ongoing costs. The grant application deadline recorded in the minutes was Nov. 18, 2022 and grant announcements were expected in early 2023.
The board also accepted a FY 2023 Delinquency Prevention Grant for Juvenile Court in the amount of $20,470. The grant will fund the Strengthening Families Program 7-17 (SFP 7-17) for youth who are first-time offenders, diverted from juvenile court, or charged with a CHINS offense and identified as at risk. The award period is Oct. 1, 2022–Sept. 30, 2023, and the minutes state there is no county match.
Separately, the board accepted a resolution appointing Bob Chiddister to fill the unexpired term of Dixon White (resigned Nov. 1, 2021); Chiddister’s term runs from Oct. 6, 2022 to Sept. 26, 2023.
Chairman Jensen also briefed the meeting on updated Service Delivery Strategy agreements and a 10-year term extension between Whitfield County and the cities of Dalton, Tunnel Hill, Varnell and the town of Cohutta; the updated SDS agreements cover dozens of service areas and will be submitted to the Georgia Department of Community Affairs as required under OCGA 36-70-20.
