Whitfield County reports stronger-than-expected local tax receipts, approves budget tweaks

Whitfield County’s finance director reported that August tax receipts outpaced budget estimates and the board approved the county’s August 2022 financial statement during the Oct. 6 meeting.
Finance Director James Garvin presented the August financials showing Local Option Sales Tax (LOST) receipts of $1,136,925, which the minutes report as 7% above the budgeted $1,062,500. Year-to-date LOST totaled $9,449,155, about 12.25% higher than the same period the prior year. Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT) receipts for August were $447,944. The minutes state YTD actual revenues were $24,356,895 (5.5% above projection) and YTD actual expenditures were $33,797,189 (2.25% above projection). The board approved the financial statement 4-0.
During the meeting the board also approved two small budget amendments: a $5,000 increase to the Board of Commissioners administration small equipment account to pay for a gun tube for a cannon replica at Rocky Face Ridge Park, and a $5,000 increase to the Animal Shelter gasoline account due to rising fuel costs. Both amendments passed unanimously.
The financial presentation and the modest amendments were taken up as part of routine business; the board heard no public comment on these items at the time they were considered.
