Whitfield County approves $817,964 Motorola service agreement, EMA repairs and courthouse security upgrades

On Nov. 14 the Whitfield County Board of Commissioners approved a three-year Motorola service agreement (not to exceed $817,964), awarded $41,852.60 in repairs to the EMA Mobile Command Vehicle to TEN-8 Fire and Safety, and approved courthouse security cameras and a duress system funded by SPLOST 2020.
The Whitfield County Board of Commissioners on Nov. 14 approved several large contracts and capital purchases for emergency communications, emergency response equipment and courthouse security.
Commissioner Greg Jones moved and Commissioner John Thomas seconded approval of a three-year Motorola service agreement for Emergency Services support and maintenance not to exceed $817,964.53; the board approved the motion 3-0. County staff said the current agreement would expire Dec. 31 and that, without renewal, use of the EMA radio system would be difficult and expensive.
Separately, the board accepted a single bid from TEN-8 Fire and Safety for $41,852.60 to repair the county's EMA Mobile Command Vehicle after the manufacturer's updated repair quote rose to $64,967.62. EMA had previously set aside $50,000 in capital for MCV repairs; the board approved the TEN-8 contract 3-0.
The board also approved Sheriff's Department requests to purchase and install security cameras across three floors of the renovated courthouse for $78,500.60 and to install a duress system in secure areas for $58,045.00. Odin Integrated Technologies of Dalton will perform the installation; both purchases will be funded by SPLOST 2020.
Other contracts approved included a $55,000 contract with Southern Right of Way Clearing LLC for tree removal at Carbondale Business Park and an $82,250 contract with GMASS to update commercial and industrial property valuation schedules for the Tax Assessor. All contracts passed on unanimous 3-0 votes recorded in the minutes.
Why it matters: the Motorola agreement and MCV repairs directly affect county emergency response and communications resilience. The courthouse security and duress systems are capital improvements paid from SPLOST 2020 funds.
Next steps: departments will execute awarded contracts; finance and procurement will record awards and track expenditures against SPLOST and capital budgets.
