Whitfield commissioners approve and deny several rezoning requests at Dec. 12 meeting
Summary
The board split on a combined motion to accept planning commission recommendations but then voted individually: denied a Charles Smith rezoning, approved Hugh Wilkins and Bryan Spence requests, denied Salvador Garcia and Eclipse Cottages (the latter denied 3-1), and recorded the votes on each parcel.

The Whitfield County Board of Commissioners debated and decided a package of rezoning requests at its Dec. 12 regular meeting, ultimately resolving each parcel individually after a combined motion failed.
An initial motion to approve the planning commission's combined recommendations failed on a 2-3 vote (Commissioners Robbins and Jones in favor; Commissioners Staten, Thomas and Chairman Jevin Jensen opposed). The board then considered each application separately.
The board voted to deny Charles Smith's request to change 10.49 acres at 1496 Houston Valley Road (parcel 27-133-18-000) from General Agriculture (GA) to Rural Residential (R-5) by a 4-0 vote. The board approved Hugh Wilkins's request to rezone 15.64 acres on Old Dixie Highway (parcel 13-170-01-003) from Suburban Agriculture (SA) to General Agriculture (GA) 4-0. The request from Salvador Garcia to rezone 1.50 acres on South Dixie Highway (parcel 13-009-01-000) from Low Density Single Family Residential (R-2) to General Commercial (C-2) was denied 4-0.
Eclipse Cottages' request to rezone approximately 58.64 acres on North Dug Gap Road (parcels 13-005-03, 13-005-04, 13-005-06) from Estate Residential (R-1) to General Agriculture (GA) was denied 3-1, with Commissioner Robbins recording the dissent. The board approved Bryan Spence's request to modify conditions on a 1.65-acre tract at 623 Hill Road (parcel 12-281-06-000) 4-0. Finally, the board approved Earl Eleton's rezoning from General Commercial (C-2) to Low Density Single Family Residential (R-2) for a 0.50-acre lot at 1911 Dug Gap Road (parcel 12-311-26-000) 4-0.
Each action was recorded as a separate motion with the mover and seconder noted in the minutes; the board applied the planning commission recommendations on a parcel-by-parcel basis after rejecting the omnibus motion.
