Whitfield County approves $2.02 million 2022 budget amendment as revenues exceed projections

The Whitfield County Board of Commissioners on Jan. 9 approved a $2.02 million amendment to the county's 2022 expense budget to cover additional costs in the sheriff's office, buildings, Superior Court, the coroner's office, recreation, inspections and engineering.
Finance Director James Garvin presented the November 2022 financial statement, which the board approved unanimously. Garvin said year-to-date (YTD) actual revenues totaled $32,788,993, $2,243,336 (7.25%) higher than projected revenues, while YTD expenditures were $46,120,075, $1,183,689 (2.5%) above projections.
Garvin reported November Local Option Sales Tax (LOST) collections were $1,263,047, 19% above the budgeted $1,062,500; YTD LOST was $13,210,788, 13.5% higher than the prior-year period. Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT) collections for November were $380,468, with YTD TAVT at $4,679,941, about 2.75% below the prior-year total for the same timeframe.
Commissioner John Thomas moved to approve the 2022 budget amendment; Commissioner Greg Jones seconded. The motion carried 4-0. Finance staff indicated offsetting savings and revenue amendments would be presented at a subsequent meeting.
The board concluded the financial-item discussion with no changes to the motions approved at the meeting.
