Whitfield County approves emergency traffic signal for Beaverdale Road intersection

WHITFIELD COUNTY — The Whitfield County Board of Commissioners voted on Oct. 9 to authorize design and installation of a traffic signal at the intersection of Beaverdale Road and Boyles Mill/Goodhope Road as an emergency purchase.
On a motion by Commissioner Greg Jones, seconded by Commissioner Barry W. Robbins, the board approved North Cherokee Electric’s quote for $151,575. County Administrator Robert Sivick told commissioners that repeated accidents, increased driver speeds and driver errors at the intersection prompted the emergency declaration and that the signal will help control traffic flow and permit enforceable speed-limit reductions in the immediate corridor.
The board recorded the vote as 4-0 in favor. Public-works staff and the county engineer had previously considered other intersection improvements but concluded a signal was necessary after continued incidents, Sivick said. The county will next issue a purchase order and schedule installation; the minutes indicate Public Works will oversee implementation.
The motion did not include a specific construction timeline beyond standard procurement scheduling. The board did not take additional, separate action on funding sources at the meeting.
