Tift County commissioners approve SPLOST election call, generator purchase and several board appointments

Tift County commissioners approved the Consent Agenda and several routine appointments during their Sept. 11 meeting.
The board approved Resolution 2023-13 to request that an election be called for SPLOST and authorized purchase of a generator docking station and automatic transfer switch for the Law Enforcement Center at a cost of $82,477 from SPLOST VI. Commissioner Melissa Hughes moved to approve the consent agenda; Commissioner Greg Wood seconded and the motion passed 6-0.
On appointments, the board reappointed Steve Wood, Heath Barry and Earnest Dove to the Dangerous Dog Board for three-year terms; it appointed Gertrude Nakakeeto to Keep Tift Beautiful. The board also appointed Dr. Kaine Brown to the Hospital Authority to fill the unexpired term of Sam Sims; that appointment passed 5-1 with Commissioner Melissa Hughes recorded as voting against.
Why it matters: The SPLOST election call is the first formal step toward voter consideration of special-purpose local option sales tax projects. The generator purchase completes an approved SPLOST-funded equipment purchase for the Law Enforcement Center. Board appointments ensure continued membership on county advisory bodies.
