County Manager Jim Carter told the Tift County Board of Commissioners at a workshop on Aug. 8, 2023, that rumors circulating among residents about a plan to four‑lane Old Ocilla Road from 12th Street to 20th Street are incorrect.
Carter said the Georgia Department of Transportation has commissioned an engineering study that may recommend widening portions of Old Ocilla Road to add turn lanes and improve safety. He also said Tift County submitted a 2024 TIA (TSPLOST) project to GDOT proposing widening Old Ocilla Road and Mount Olive Church Road to Highway 319 to add turn lanes. City of Tifton separately has a 2018 TIA project to improve the intersection of 12th Street at Old Ocilla Road that is in design and scheduled for a final funding phase of the 2018 TSPLOST if funds are available.
"To reiterate his previous statement, he stated there are no plans to four‑lane Old Ocilla Rd from 12th St to 20th St," Carter said during the meeting, clarifying concerns raised by residents. The workshop served as a forum for county staff to update the commission and the public; no vote or commitment to construction was made at the session.
