Tift County awards Pickleball Court Complex contract to Standard Contractors, approves engineering addendum

County Manager Jim Carter told the board that bids opened Sept. 8 returned two offers: SC Barker Construction Company at $1,131,324.50 and Standard Contractors Inc at $1,238,927.56. County Engineer Stacy Watkins recommended awarding to Standard Contractors because their bid explicitly included removal of the existing court and installation of a new base and asphalt surface at no additional cost; SC Barker did not provide comparable pricing for that work even though the bid package asked for it.
Commissioner Greg Wood moved to approve the contract award to Standard Contractors Inc; Commissioner Melissa Hughes seconded. The board also approved an addendum to Watkins Engineering to allow the county engineer to provide project engineering services. Both motions carried 6-0.
Why it matters: The award commits county capital funds to a recreational infrastructure project and clarifies that the contractor will remove and replace the existing court as part of the contract price. The board recorded both the engineering addendum and the contract award during the Sept. 11 meeting.
Next steps: County staff and the county engineer will proceed with contract administration and project scheduling. No construction start date was announced at the meeting.
