Tift County seeks approval to buy 294 acres for landfill cover at roughly $1.03 million

Tift County staff told commissioners at a Dec. 5 workshop that on-site mining of suitable landfill cover material is ending and recommended buying 294 acres adjacent to the county landfill to allow continued on-site mining.
County Manager Jim Carter said the sellers (identified in the record as the Lindseys) are offering the property at $3,500 per acre for a total cost of $1,029,000. Carter presented an alternative cost estimate: purchasing cover material from a third party at approximately $180 per load. The landfill uses about 45 to 50 loads per day, which Carter said costs roughly $9,000 per day; he estimated that buying cover material for the next two years would total about $2,400,000.
Carter said the landfill staff prefers the purchase because it preserves on-site mining capability and avoids recurring hauling costs. He asked the Board to authorize the Chairman to execute necessary documents to purchase the property from the joint SWM Enterprise Fund; the board indicated its desire to place the purchase on the Consent Agenda for the Dec. 11 meeting.
Funding source: Carter stated the purchase would be paid from the joint Solid Waste Management (SWM) Enterprise Fund. No formal vote was recorded at the workshop.
