The Screven County Board of Commissioners discussed a proposal to raise the county fire fee during its April 13 meeting and agreed to postpone the matter to the May 11, 2021 meeting.
Vice-Chairman J.C. Warren raised the proposal to increase the fire fee. Commissioner Lovett said he agreed the fee should be raised, citing inflation. Commissioner Allison Willis asked whether fees would be charged on vacant parcels and suggested the county consider separate residential and vacant-parcel fee schedules. Commissioners Mike Dixon and Allison Willis expressed concern about providing services to property owners who were not paying the fee.
County Attorney Hubert Reeves cautioned that if the board intends not to enforce collection against all parcels, the county would need to amend its code to reflect that enforcement decision. The board did not adopt fee changes during the meeting and agreed to return the discussion on May 11, 2021.
Next steps: the board will revisit the proposal at its May 11 meeting; no fee change was adopted on April 13.
