Coroner James Strickland asked the Screven County Board of Commissioners on June 8 to purchase a building behind the sheriff's department to serve as the county morgue, saying hospital staff have raised concerns about odor when bodies in advanced states of decomposition are brought in.
Lagina Evans, identified in the minutes as CEO of Optim Medical Center Screven, told the Board the hospital's primary concern is that it be notified and that procedures be improved so hospital staff know when a body is on site. Commissioner J.C. Warren described the issue as "a communication issue," and Commissioner Allison Willis asked that the Board defer the matter until the Board could gather additional information.
The Board agreed to return the item to the agenda on July 13, 2021, for further consideration. No purchase or formal commitment was made at the June 8 meeting.
