Ben Hill County honors swim team, hears storm update; appoints new county clerk and delegates

At the Aug. 6 meeting commissioners recognized a Class C swim team’s state finishes, received an EMA update on Tropical Storm Debbie, reappointed a DLS board member, named a legislative voting delegate and announced Pamela Turner will replace outgoing County Clerk Donna Prather.
Ben Hill County commissioners used part of their Aug. 6 meeting to recognize local accomplishments, hear an emergency management update and approve a set of personnel and appointment items.
DLS Director Keith Morrison introduced Swim Coach Jennifer Shoults, who reported the Class C Swim Team has 41 swimmers: 32 competed at the district meet and 31 advanced to the state meet. At state the team finished third overall; four swimmers were state champions, six placed second and 11 placed third.
EMA Director Jake Hughes briefed the commission on Tropical Storm Debbie, saying the storm was not as severe as originally forecast. Hughes reported winds reached about 30 mph and the Road Department began collecting fallen trees at about 1:00 a.m. Tuesday. Chairman Steve Taylor thanked the director for timely updates.
On personnel and appointments, Vice‑Chair Hope Harmon moved and Commissioner Daniel Cowan seconded the reappointment of Jennifer Shoults to the DLS board; the motion passed unanimously. Commissioner Daniel Cowan moved and Commissioner John Mooney seconded appointing Vice‑Chair Hope Harmon as the county’s voting delegate for the 2024 Legislative Leadership Conference; that motion also passed unanimously.
In commissioners’ remarks the board thanked County Clerk Donna R. Prather for her years of service. County Manager Michael Dinnerman announced Human Resource Director Pamela Turner will become County Clerk; Dinnerman said he will seek a replacement to handle Turner’s payroll responsibilities while she continues as HR director.
Chairman Taylor also announced a Special Called Meeting for Aug. 14 at 11:30 a.m. to discuss personnel matters.
